“For years I was a one-on-one care provider and also taught yoga classes for people with disabilities, but I was looking for something more—to be of service in a more meaningful way. There are so many reasons why I love being a home provider. I feel lucky that the woman I am supporting is a great fit for me and our household.  We both enjoy the same healthy lifestyle. We have been together for two years now, and I consider her and her family to be our larger extended family. I don’t feel like it’s a ‘job’ to be a home provider. I support her and try to meet her needs as I would anyone I care about, and I just happen to be paid to do so.”

"I have been a Home Provider for a woman in her 40's for 5 and 1/2 years now, and I would describe our relationship as good friends. She has given me the pleasure of accompanying her on trips to Washington, D.C. and Alaska. Because she is non-speaking, one of my biggest challenges has been to understand how she experiences her disabilities in order to assess how she is doing. Over the years I have learned how to "listen" to her in new, non-verbal ways, and I have found this has increased my own self-awareness.

I believe some people are concerned that becoming a Home Provider will completely take over their life. For me, this position has given me the opportunity to have my own schedule and the flexibility to do my life. I am an Artisan who has always worked from home anyway, and this has given me the financial support and freedom to do that more easily. That's why it works so well for me."
